The Decemberists Live!

So this past Friday night (1/28) I was lucky enough to get to see The Decemberists live at the House of Blues in Boston with my brother Josh. The opening act Wye Oak was pretty good, different than The Decemberists but not bad. The Decemberists however were amazing. A great show through and through. a nice variety of song choices spanning most of if not all of their releases. The energy was great and everyone appeared to have had a great time. Anyways I highly recommend seeing them if the opportunity ever presents itself. Here are some photos I took.

Sin(Sinbad)

that is all

a talking bird with a top hat!

Hey there, well I have been toiling away on some new characters for Cast as well as fleshing out plot details etch. Now though I know what you're thinking and the answer is no. No the title of this post was not just random things thrown together. Yes, you're prayers have been answered. There is a character in Cast named Sin (short for Sinbad) who just so happens to be a bird with a top hat on, who can talk. More on Sin and hopefully some sketches over the next few days :D

working and working

Ok so this is just a little sample of what I am making right now. It's a long process because of many factors but I assure you I am working on it.

Just some artisits I'm inspired by.

Hey there, well I figured I would just compile a little list of some of the artists I look at when I need inspiration or just some fresh ideas. In no particular order.

Inoue Takehiko
Tite Kubo
Masashi Kishimoto
LeSean Thomas
Mitch Breitweiser
Hiroaki Samura
Marko Djurdjevic
Tim Sale
Yoshitaka Amano

And I'm sure there are a bunch more who's names are escaping me at the moment. Who do you look to for inspiration, either in art or life?

Just a quick update :D

Ok so this is just a quick sketch of the main character of my OGN Cast. A few things because I'm sure you're thinking it, yes those are two cigarettes he is smoking at the same time. Yes he is wearing a vest, button down and tie. Lastly yes that is the pocket watch from the notebook cover I posted on here in his pocket. Well that's all for now, please, let me know what you think.

MLK day reminder

Now this isn't a reminder about Martin Luther King day but more so a reminder of what that day represents. And what the man himself stood for and fought for. With all of the negativity and hatred in this world it is very easy for us to lose are compassion towards others, our humanity even. I am just basically saying please, try and be respectful of yourselves and others. Try and push forward and do what you can to make this world we live in a better place for everyone. I'm not perfect and neither are you but with some patience and a littler effort we can be better, we will be better. As the man himself said "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." - Martin Luther King Jr.

Also I am really trying to produce some things for you all to see and read and will really try and keep this blog updated regularly and keep it going. Enjoy yourselves and be safe.

Sorry for falling behind!

Ok so I fell a little behind, I hope you can forgive me. Anyways I just have a few little things to talk about that are kind of all over the place so this will probably be a little speratic. Firstly let me just say that the "When We Were Lions" EP by Charlie Simpson (of the band Fightstar/ My favorite band ever) is amazing. I am in love with this music. Anyways, next, I have decided that I want to brush up on my criminal psychology and pathology so I will be doing that in my spare time. Also, Cast is coming along well, I'm trying to take it slow a little, don't want to get burnt out :D How are you all? Have you checked out Sword of the Stranger after my would be review? I'm interested to see if you did and what you thought of it. Anyways check out that EP I mentioned, good stuff. Peace out cyber homies!

just a quickish rough

So this is just a rough concept design for the protagonist in Cast. I am still tweaking design elements but this is the basic style for wardrobe, the art style may change a bit though. Probably something more along the lines of a Lupin the 3rd or something by Ghibli. Anyways let me know what you think :D

Sword of the Stranger

Ok so this is a sort of review slash write up about one of my all time favorite animated features Sword of the Stranger. Sword of the Stranger was made by studio Bones and is an absolutely phenomenal work in animation. It has some of the coolest designs and just some of the best fight scenes in any anime I've seen. I think that while the plot may not be as deep as other movies it still serves it's purpose which to me is basically just to tell a pretty good story but mainly there to showcase some killer animation. This movie is very inspirational to me as an illustrator/comic artist because I think the style and camera work as well as the movement are very good and almost educational in a sense. I am fortunate enough to own the US version on Blu ray but also the Japanese deluxe edition that comes with a small book of some character model sheets as well as a collection of key frames from various parts of the film. Also packaged with it is a book of storyboards, literally the whole movies story boards, this was the reason I bought it. So like I sad not much of a review as more so a reflection and insight into what this movie means to me and how it impacted me. Here's a trailer and I hope you check out Sword of the Stranger.

Next time: Cowboy Bebop- The series and the feature :D

Cast semi update

Hey so I have been toiling away with working out more stuff for my OGN Cast. I posted briefly about it a few posts ago and nothing has changed to drastically. The rough plot is fleshing out well as is the main protagonist and antagonist as well as the main purpose behind the story. Anyways just a small update, I hope to have some rough sketches up soon for anyone who is interested. Feel free to comment questions about Cast and I will do my best to answer them.

maybe?

Hey would anyone who reads this blog be interested in seeing some more reviews of things? I have some art books I could talk about or some movies I've seen and some music I've heard. Oh well just a thought.

some other art stuffs to nibble on.

Ok so until I can get things truly under way here and start showing off some new art everyone feel free to check me out on deviantart. I believe it's teegketchen.deviantart.com. Anyways that's that. Secondly I have realized as of late that I haven't seen a new really good 2d animated movie lately. The last one I remember seeing was Ponyo and I liked it but it wasn't like a "oh mah gawd so good" type of movie to me, oh well anyone have any suggestions? Though while I'm on animation and Ponyo I heart Studio Ghibli, I think that Howls Moving Castle, Spirited Away, My neighbor totoro, Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke are all phenomenal not only works of animation but film. Lastly before I get out of here if you like solid animation and haven't seen Tekkonkinkreet by Studio 4c or Sword of the Stranger by studio Bones please do so. Those are two of my all time favorite animated features. I think I might try and do a more in depth post about some of these films in the coming weeks, interested?

NBA 2K11 and my rekindled love for the game.

Ok so I couldn't post yesterday because apparently blogger was on the fritz or something. Anyways this post is what I meant to post yesterday and I will do today's real post later. Now on topic, have you played NBA 2K11? If you answer no then do yourself a favor and do try it. It is a phenomenal game and as far as I can tell the best and truest to life simulator of the NBA experience. Anyways I would like to use this space as an opportunity to thank everyone involved in creating this game for getting me back into basketball. I used to love the game and it was almost as if when Jordan left so did my interest in basketball. However after trying the game out at a friends house and getting hooked I bought it for myself and just abused it. Anytime I played a game for the first month or two after I got 2K11 that's all I played. Now I am back watching basketball, following players and teams and loving my hometown team the Boston Celtics. Also I am playing basketball myself. I love playing it and I think it's a healthy and fun alternative form of exorcise for anyone who finds themselves loathing the normal routines at a gym. So get out there and play or watch or whatever. Until next time.

This is what I'm working on.

This is the notebook I will be carrying with me practically everywhere. Now if you can't make out what this is it is a pocket watch and below it is the title which is "Cast" Now I will give you a brief run down of what Cast is before I get out of here. Cast is a world where magic is real and people are aware of it. Though not everyone can use it there are those who can, these people are broken up into groups or types. The first is the casters and this is where the story gets it's name. The second are weavers and then there are binders. Now there are a bunch of crazy characters some very interesting locales and a bunch of cool stuff so stay tuned and I hope you're as interested and excited about this project as I am.

There will be art, I promise!

So I have been thinking and one of the main reasons I started this blog was to showcase and have my art commented on and critiqued. Well that's all well and good but there isn't any art here. Well not yet anyways, I am sketching though and I plan to have things up pretty soon for you people to check out. Well that's it for now, later.

I've seen two movies in the last couple of weeks.

First let me open this by saying I love movies. I am very much so inspired by films when making my art and it is rare for me to decline an invitation to watch a movie. Now, with that sad I have gone to the theater twice in the last couple of weeks and here's what I thought. The first movie I saw was Fighter starring Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale. I thought Fighter was great, it was a compelling story and the characters seemed very real and very adapted. I thought the acting was great from pretty much everyone in it but Christian Bale as he often does stole the show to me. He seems to just get to another level that very few other actors can. Here's a trailer for Fighter which If I had to establish some sort of rating system I would probably do something with a one to five scale so I'd give fighter like a 4 out of 5. That seems fair. Go see it.

Now, the second movie I saw was True Grit starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, as well as some other people but whatever. Anyways I thought the movie was good, Matt Damon was good, Jeff Bridges was awesome and hilarious as he usually is. Though I thought overall it wasn't what I was anticipating, there wasn't as much action as I thought there would have been. Now I'm not some bro who needs explosions and gun fights to like a movie I'm just saying it's not what I anticipated. Acting was ok overall, Jeff Bridges was really good. Story was neat characters seemed real enough. I'd say you should see it but theres no reason why you can't wait for it to hit like a redbox or something.

This is hilarious!

I saw this while at work tonight when my buddy Steve showed it to me. I think it's funny and I think you will too.
